My Integration Essay

Global Warming

         Global Warming is a controversial issue; it means an increase in the temperature of the climate with some other dangerous changes in it. Many people think that this issue is a recent one, however, others think that this issue started many years ago. In this paper, the past and the present of this issue will be addressed for more clarification of the starting point of global warming.

         This issue started when the oil was extracted, the chemical plants were built. In addition to that, weapons played an important role in causing harmful damages not only in human but also in the environment which then led to what called now global warming. According to Monee, a woman I interviewed in Foxdale retirement house, the issue started with the industrial development probably in 1940s. She said that the factories and the weapons that used in the Second World War at that time were releasing many chemical substances that cause serious damages for both the environment and people; however, people in that time did not know that these environmental issues would lead to what called global warming. She also stated that this issue was not recognized until 1980s. People in 1940s and 1950s were concentrating on how they can develop their jobs and their lifestyle without thinking about the damages that this kind of actions or decisions such as building many factories might cause. According to the PSU yearbooks collection, people did not start to take actions in the environmental issues such as pollutions and climate changes until 1980s; however, the environmental issues had appeared long time ago. The article “Scientists Warn of Global Warming 'smoking gun'” clarify that some scientists noticed some negative and fast changes in the climate in 1980. They also noticed an expansion in the ozone hole. In addition, they warned that people in the earth would experience a serious and a huge increase in the heat for the up coming years (Charles Hanley, 1997).

Nowadays, more and more people are focusing on eliminating the environmental issues; many people are trying to help in reducing the chemical plants releases in order to tackle the global warming problems. In addition, the Internet plays an important role in spreading the awareness of the problem. For example, environmentalists create websites that elucidate the negative effects of global warming on the earth with some effective solutions. For instance, the website Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) that presents articles about the global warming and how to tackle this problem. This website is a result of a group effort; Members of this group devote their efforts in the environmental defense. NRDC group is one of many groups that are established recently in order to spread more environmental awareness.

            In conclusion, the global warming issue had started in 1940s. However, people in that time did not notice it until 1980s. While scientists in that time were trying to clarify the problem and the causes of it, environmentalists now are trying to eliminate the problem by providing possible solutions.

My Section Summary

In this section, I have read about the symbols of elements. I also have read about the mass and the atomic number of the elements and how to calculate each one of them. I had learned these information in high school, however, reading these information in english is challenging thing for me.   I aiming to finish reading  this section as fast and as soon as possible and jump to the organic chemistry section since I'm  obsessed with it. I want to test my ability of understanding such information; I'm looking forward to do so. :)  

My Reaction about the Tripe

I really enjoyed being in that place. the couple that waad and I met were so nice. we discussed many topics such as rules in some countries that had been changed over the years , global warmming and some political issues. we also talked about our hobbies, and they were interested in knowing our hometown location on the world map. Therefore, they brought the maps' book, and they started to  show us the places that they had visited in the world. This is one of  the wonderful and remarkable experiences that I have ever had. This is the one that I will never ever forget .  

My Section Summary

In this section, I read about the discovery of radioactivity. Also, the three types of radiation, Alpha, Beta and Gamma, were clarified in this section. I concluded this reading section by reading a demonstration of the nuclear atomic. I found this section more interesting than others because it discusses one of my favorite topics in chemistry which is radiations.

My Interesting Quote

I started reading a new chapter which is about the theory done by John Dalton  and the discovery of atoms. while I was reading this chapter, I found a really interesting sentence; " Neither [Dalton] nor those who followed him during the century after his work was published had direct evidence for the existence of atoms"(page 39). I found it interesting because it raised many questions in my head. For instance, I was wondering how Dalton got the idea of the existence of atoms and what made him assuming that this little thing in substances is the atom without any evidence. I'm still wondering about these things. I hope I can find an answer of those questions somewhere soon .

My Feeling about this Section

         The part that I have read was full of numbers and calculations; I couldn't fully understand the reason of putting such information in chemisty book. Also, I was not  able to completely understand the calculations that were explained in the book which drove me mad and made me frustrated. Therefore. I will be reading the same part until I completely understand it.

My Most Interesting Fact

The fact that I have read and was very interesting is that in an experiment announced in 2006, scientists were able to create three atoms of element called 118. Unfortunately, those atoms survived for just 0.9 milliseconds. Because of the perspective that I have about creating atoms, I couldn’t imagine that this fact is possible until I read it in the chemistry book. This fact has completely changed my perspective toward the possibility of creating atoms. 

Surprising Fact

     It was the first time that I read historical information about the measurement units, especially, the metric system. I have read in a part of my textbook that this system was first developed in France during the late eighteenth century which was surprising fact. I actually didn't think about the development of the measurement units in FRANCE. I always think about France as a country that specialized in  fashion and perfume; I didn't think about it as a country which has an interest in science.  Therefore, for me, it was a  really surprising fact.

My Reaction

So far, I think the chemistry book is very interesting. The examples are very helpful. However, I am still reading the basics of chemistry;I didn't get into the complex parts in chemistry, so I don't Know if I will be able to understand the complex parts of it by myself or not. Even though I am worried about understanding suphsticated parts, I am ready to get there.  

My Reaction

        The chemistry book that I am reading seems very interesting. Now I Know some information about the atom and its aspects in English which makes me happy. :) I am so excited to continue reading and learning.

This is the time when I can start challenging myself to read and understand a college textbook. Therefore, my choice for the reading class is Chemistry The Central Science.

         My name is Roqaya, and I am from Saudi Arabia. I love science, therefore, I came to USA in order to be an undergraduate student in chemical engineering field and to  achieve my goals. I  like to cook different types of food such as rice, pasta,pizza,and cake. I usually spend most of my time in watching documentary programs, especially, the ones that related to science. In addition, I like both arabic and english grammar. Studying, understanding and being able to demonstrate grammar rules, especially, english ones are things that make me feel happy about myself. finding grammar errors is something interesting and enjoyable for me, and it is my favorite game.
